Ghana boss backs Boateng to handle pressure

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has backed Kevin-Prince Boateng to be strong enough to cope with what could be an emotionally-charged World Cup clash with Germany.
The Portsmouth midfielder became public enemy number one in Germany, the country of his birth, last month after his tackle on Germany captain Michael Ballack in the FA Cup final ruled the Chelsea man out of the World Cup.

The Group D match at Soccer City also throws up the possibility of Boateng coming up against his half-brother Jerome, a Germany international who has reportedly broken off contact with Kevin-Prince over the Ballack incident.

However, Black Stars boss Rajevac believes his player has the fortitude to come through what could be a trying evening, with a place in the last 16 at stake for both sides.

The Serbian said: "We have talked about this, the media created this problem. Even if there had been a problem it lies behind us. Kevin-Prince Boateng will do his best, he will focus, he will not be provoked, he is a professional. They may be brothers off the pitch but on the pitch they are not brothers.

"He will do his best and play without any pressure and play his normal game in order to reach a good result."

Germany coach Joachim Low is confident nerves will not be an issue for his young side as they look to keep alive their World cup dream.

Germany, with youngsters such Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Holger Badstuber given key roles, could hardly have had a better start to the competition as they thumped Australia 4-0 in their opening match.

That was probably the best performance from any side in the first round of fixtures in South Africa, but the European superpowers were brought crashing back to earth in their next match as they lost 1-0 to Serbia in a clash which saw Miroslav Klose sent off and Lukas Podolski miss a penalty for Low's team.

The defeat left Germany level on three points with the Serbians and one point adrift of Group D leaders Ghana, and means Die Nationalmannschaft could be a shock early casualty of the World Cup unless they can beat the African outfit at Soccer City.

The pressure is on, but Low is getting a good vibe from his players, many of whom are playing in their first World Cup.

"When I talk to the players I do not get the impression they are nervous or worried after the defeat against Serbia. Although it is very young, the team has this confidence and inner conviction that it can beat Ghana," he said.

"I think we've digested and worked on the defeat to Serbia in the last two or three days, we're focused, we've prepared for the game against Ghana, a match which will not be easy.

"Ghana are a good team who have played well but we are convinced we can win this game and can get into the next round."

He added: "I believe the pressure is always there in any game. Lots of teams are in a similar situation and need to win their third game, England, France, Italy...they all have a lot of pressure and have to win their third game.

"Our players can deal with the situation, as far as I can see. I don't see a lot of nervousness, I feel concentration and conviction.

"Players like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arne Friedrich all give me the impression they can lead the team. We know we have the potential, the quality and the ability to beat Ghana."

Socceroos are not whingers - Neill

Australia captain Lucas Neill has angrily hit out at critics branding his team as 'whingers'.
Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell, sent off in Australia's opening two World Cup matches against Germany and Ghana respectively, have both complained about harsh decisions.

Everton star Cahill said Australia "have never been given the fair go" while Kewell felt unjustly treated after being dismissed for handball on the goalline.

Those comments have been seized upon in certain sections of the media while Football Federation Australia president Frank Lowy weighed in by saying, "We've got to accept those decisions, whingeing is not a trait we should follow".

Neill is incensed at the criticism and this afternoon mounted a strong defence of his team-mates.

The former Blackburn and West Ham defender said: "Tim never said that. Why would he?

"Every single player went out of that dressing room the other day and took it on the chin. There is nothing we could have done about it.

"My quote was, 'We didn't get decisions going our way'. That is not whingeing. That is just the way it is.

"Australia has never been a team that whinges, we don't want to be regarded as a team of whingers.

"You look at how we reacted when we went down to 10 men - we took it on the chin.

"In the end we could have won the game - that is not a team that whinges.

"A team that whinges is a team that would have conceded a goal, and then lost 3-1 or 4-1 - and then complained to the referee."

With just one point from their two matches in South Africa, Australia must beat Serbia in their final Group D match in Nelspruit tomorrow to have any hope of reaching the second round.

Kewell will be suspended but Neill says the rest of the team will go out fighting.

The 32-year-old, speaking at the pre-match press conference, said: "Harry Kewell said he has worked hard to get where he has and now he has been sent off after 20 minutes.

"That is not really a whinge, that is disappointment.

"But we are going to give him another game, we are going to try anyway.

"Everything that has been written in the last few days is that we are a team of whingers.

"I think it is everybody else that is doing the whingeing.

"We are the guys that have to go out and get on with it."

Serbia coach Radomir Antic is backing his players to make history - but claims they are under no pressure.

Antic's side can reach the second round of the World Cup for the first time if they win.

A draw might even be sufficient for the Serbians, who exited after the group stage four years ago, depending on the outcome of Ghana's clash with Germany in Johannesburg.

Antic, the veteran former Barcelona and Real Madrid coach, said: "We know that we have an opportunity of historical significance and we will try to do our best.

"I would not like to put any additional pressure on my boys by saying they have to, but when I say I believe in my team, I say it quite truthfully. I am not just saying it.

"I am optimistic because I know how my boys have performed during their last three training sessions - these were actually the best three sessions ever. This shows their spirit and now we have an opportunity to show it."

Frenzied France staring exit in the face
It is safe to say that France are in complete disarray. Following their drab 0-0 draw with Uruguay and 2-0 reverse against Mexico, Les Bleus stand on the precipice of a second group stage exit in the last three World Cups. The surprise run to the final in 2006 seems just a distant memory and this time around, Domenech's side do not possess the Zinedine Zidane get-out-of-jail card.

Poor performances on the pitch have been commonplace in the four years since that fateful night in Berlin and in South Africa, there has been no sparkle. Whispers about players being unhappy with much-maligned coach Raymond Domenech have been bubbling under the surface for a while, but they have erupted into the public arena in the past few days.

Nicolas Anelka's alleged foul-mouthed rant at Domenech at half-time in the Mexico game was widely reported and certainly pointed to the sort of unrest that the French Football Federation (FFF) felt was unacceptable. Anelka was sent home but the problem was not solved. The players revolted - refusing to train on Sunday. Perhaps the strangest development in the whole debacle was that Domenech - the victim of Anelka's tirade - was the one to read the statement revealing the players' unhappiness. If the incident provokes the players and coach to be aligned in opposition to the FFF, it could amazingly bring the team closer together.

For South Africa, the end of the road seems near. The Bafana Bafana fans have provided a colourful, passionate presence and will do everything to lift their team going into the final game. But after the opening draw against Mexico, the hosts' world ranking of 83 was exposed fully by Uruguay in a comprehensive 3-0 defeat. Salt was rubbed into South African wounds as goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was sent-off, with back-up stopper Moeneeb Josephs in line to replace him against France.

It would seem that Carlos Alberto Parreira's side need a miracle, and what they (as well as France) will also be hoping for is a winner in the Mexico v Uruguay game. The miracle could have come in the form of Les Bleus' tumultuous preparation, but changes need to be made to take full advantage, starting with the 4-5-1 formation that has left star striker Katlego Mphela marginalised in the opening two matches.

France player to watch: Thierry Henry. Les Bleus' all-time leading scorer has become a peripheral figure in South Africa; the once mighty captain fantastic seems to have lost his va-va-voom to such an extent that he was an unused substitute against Mexico. But Anelka's departure opens the door for a return to the starting line-up that will likely be encouraged by his team-mates. One of the most talented players of his generation, Henry still possesses the talent to unlock any defence and could yet provide the inspiration to pull France back from the brink.

South Africa player to watch: Reneilwe Letsholonyane. The 'Divine Ponytail' he may not be, but Letsholonyane's locks have been seen bounding up and down the pitch in Bafana Bafana's first two games. Full of energy, he has been a driving force in South Africa's midfield; his ability to close-down opponents when they have the ball and burst forward at pace when his own team are in possession have made him an integral player for Parreira's side.

Key Battle: Abou Diaby v Steven Pienaar. Diaby will have to shoulder the responsibility of being France's midfield ball-winner because of Jeremy Toulalan's suspension, providing a box-to-box presence and some strength in the middle of the park. He will have his hands full facing up to the energy of Letsholonyane and Siphiwe Tshabalala, as well as the guile of Steven Pienaar, who produced one of his most memorable performances at club level against Diaby's Arsenal last season. Pienaar has not lived up to his billing as South Africa's key man thus far but he relishes the big occasion and will hope to prove himself and provide a spark against the French.

Trivia: Uruguay's 3-0 win over South Africa last Wednesday represented the largest margin of victory against a host nation in the group stage in World Cup history.

Stats: Only three hosts have failed to finish among the top eight teams at a World Cup: Spain in 1982 (12th), the United States in 1994 (14th), and Japan in 2002 (9th).

Odds: South Africa (3.25), North Korea (2.30), the draw (3.30) are all on offer at Bet365, while Thierry Henry to score the last goal might be worth a flutter at 7.50.

Prediction: Anelka's removal from the squad and the subsequent player revolt may just spark the sort of siege mentality needed to inspire a struggling France side to victory. South Africa will be no walkovers but their fans will leave Free State Stadium feeling disappointed at Bafana's exit.

Venue: Free State Stadium

Domenech backs Anelka expulsion

France coach Raymond Domenech insists the decision to send Nicolas Anelka home was the correct one.

The players returned to training on Monday after they boycotted Sunday's session in protest.

They were outraged at the Chelsea striker being banished by the French Football Federation after his row with Domenech became public knowledge.

Speaking ahead of the crucial Group A match against South Africa, Domenech said: "The sanction is justified and I support the federation.

"Nobody should behave in such a way. High level sportsmen have to lead by example."

Explaining why he had read out a statement on behalf of the players after they refused to train, Domenech said: "It was an aberration. We had to do something. The French people had a right to know.

"What I should have said at the end of the message was that I did not support this action.

"With the (FFF) president (Jean-Pierre Escalettes) and staff members we tried to convince them it was stupid. I disagreed with the document. What they were doing was unthinkable.

"We've wasted a lot of energy. There are no words to explain what has happened. I'm hoping we will now have action on the pitch rather than off it."

France are in danger of making an early exit after taking one point from two games.

Domenech insists he will continue to run things his way even though it could be his last match in charge with Laurent Blanc set to take over.

He said: "I am responsible for the team and the game. I have always been in charge of the make-up of the team. That is not in dispute.

"Has our reputation been tarnished? That will depend on the outcome of the match. It is up to the players to realise the magnitude of what they have done.

"They have to play their hearts out to show what they can do and I think they will be extremely motivated to win the game. People want performances not excuses. They have to show they love football and the French team."

Asked if some players might not want to play, Domenech avoided the question and said: "I will pick the players who are mentally and physically in the best shape to win the game."

South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena insists there is no dissent in the ranks ahead of the crucial match.

There have been reports of favouritism in Carlos Alberto Parreira's squad as they prepare to face a team in apparent chaos.

But Portsmouth defender Mokoena said: "Some people are so disappointed there have not been any problems in the group.

"The atmosphere is the camp is incredible. I am certainly not aware of any rifts."

Bafana Bafana coach Parreira added: "We've never had any problems during the whole preparation."

Mokoena's role as captain has been called into question by the African National Congress Youth League, who say he should be stripped of the armband.

The ANCYL are unhappy with his performances in both the Mexico match which ended in a draw and the defeat by Uruguay and want a change made.

Spokesman Floyd Shivambu said: "We believe that the captain of Bafana Bafana, Aaron Mokoena, sometimes makes costly mistakes, which the team and the country cannot afford in a do-or-die soccer encounter.

"The coach and tactical team should honestly assess the captain's readiness for the match against France."

Parreira will make five changes to the side that lost to Uruguay, two of them enforced as Kagisho Dikgacoi and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune are suspended.

Even a win for Bafana Bafana would not be enough if Mexico and Uruguay play out a draw.

Parreira is convinced the top two teams will play fair and said: "I'm sure the players will not make a deal and say let's draw this game.

"Maybe one of the two teams do not want to play Argentina and they will go for a win. So we will never know what's going on in their minds.

"The reality is that is it out of our hands but that will not affect our motivation for the game.

"The group is very tough. It would be a disappointment if we were to go out but I do not consider it as a failure.

"What I can promise the South African public is that we are going to give it our best shot. We have accept that this is the World Cup and whatever is thrown against you, you must adapt."

Draw enough for top two to progress
The two favourites to progress from Group A meet on Tuesday knowing a draw will be enough for both sides to reach the second round. Though a tie is the ideal scenario for both nations, one hopes that there will be no repeat of West Germany's mutually beneficial 1-0 win over Austria at the 1982 finals. With the team that comes second in Group A facing the daunting prospect of Argentina in the second round, there is certainly plenty left for Mexico and Uruguay to play for.
Mexico have shown plenty of attacking promise, with Giovani Dos Santos emerging as a key creative figure for Javier Aguirre's side, and their victory against France was just reward for a policy of throwing caution to the wind. But question marks remain over their defence, and with a real tendency to leave large spaces on the wings, Uruguay's pair of Pereiras - Alvaro and Maxi - have the ability to punish them in a way that Les Bleus didn't manage. Mexico's failure to convert their chances proved costly in the 1-1 draw with South Africa, but against France they proved they have the ability to add substance to their unquestionable style.

After a cagey approach to the opening 0-0 draw with France, Oscar Tabarez unleashed Diego Forlan to devastating effect against South Africa. Edinson Cavani was brought into partner Luis Suarez up front, with Forlan moving back into the hole, where the Atletico Madrid forward was free to drop deep and influence the game - even netting two goals for his troubles. The formation change also gave Luis Suarez a new lease of life as he created two of Uruguay's goals and the South American's renewed attacking freedom means Mexico's Rafael Marquez will likely be charged with keeping a watchful eye on the in-form Forlan.

Uruguay player to watch: Diego Perez. The unsung hero of the Uruguay side, Perez provides a combatative and steely presence in midfield, doing all the ugly work so the more creative players can flourish. Without Perez, the likes of Diego Forlan, Alvaro Pereira and Luis Suarez would not have the ball to work with; he is a vital cog in the thus far efficient Uruguay machine.

Mexico player to watch: Cuauhtemoc Blanco . At 37 years old, legendary striker Blanco is the oldest player to have appeared at the 2010 finals and has taken up the Roger Milla-esque role of veteran super sub. Having been overlooked for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the Mexican public were delighted by Javier Aguirre's decision to recall the cult figure to the national team set-up. His goal against France means he has now scored in three finals (1998, 2002 and 2010) and the man who brought us the bunny-hop still has the touch and football brain to cause any team problems.
Key Battle: Guillermo Franco v Diego Lugano. Uruguay have yet to concede at this year's finals, and the presence of defensive colossus and team captain Lugano has been key to their two clean sheets. Imperious in the air and hard in the tackle, Lugano takes no prisoners, which does not bode well for misfiring Mexico striker Guillermo Franco. Having scored in a warm-up game against England, Franco has regressed to the profligate figure West Ham fans were accustomed to watching last season. He does possess good anticipation and seven international goals says that he can score at this level, but he will need something special to escape Lugano's clutches.

Trivia: Seven different players recorded multiple-goal games for Uruguay in its first three trips to the World Cup (1930, 1950, and 1954), including Oscar Miguez, who did it three times. But Diego Forlan was the first Uruguayan player to score twice in a World Cup match since Juan Hohberg scored a brace against Hungary in 1954.

Stats: Mexico striker Javier Hernandez (age 22) and Cauhetemoc Blanco (37) set a record of sorts by scoring against France. Never before had a pair of teammates that far apart in age scored in the same World Cup match.

Odds: Mexico (3.75), Uruguay (4.30), the draw (1.80) are all on offer at Bet365, while Diego Forlan is attractively priced at 6.50 to score the first goal.

Prediction: Though neither side will be keen on facing Argentina, what's more important is that they both progress to the second round. It's a match that seems to scream Latin flair, but in reality will be a tight contest that threatens to end in the draw that both nations need.

Tuesday 22nd June 2010
Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

Aguirre will not settle for draw

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has stressed the importance of winning the Group A match against Uruguay and insists his side will not settle for a draw that would take both teams through.

There are fears the two sides may play out a stalemate at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium - and dump rivals South Africa and France out of the competition in the process.

FIFA stated last week they expect all 32 finalists in South Africa to play fairly and Aguirre is adamant his side will be going all out to win.

"We're going to try and win," the El Tri boss said. "We can be first, second, third or even fourth in the group.

"The law of the Mexican side is to win. If as a consequence of what happens on the pitch there's a draw or a defeat and we both qualify with no major goal differences, then we'll both be happy.

"But I can guarantee the Mexican side is going to go out there to try and win."

The Mexicans, who have a solid record at World Cups having reached the last 16 in four straight tournaments since 1994, also have the added incentive of avoiding a clash with Argentina in the second round if they can top the group.

Aguirre continued: "My players are very relaxed and know they can be either first or second in the group. They know they have to be fully focussed because we still haven't achieved anything, so we have no reason to feel happy.

"Mathematically we still don't have our ticket to the next round and we have to try and take those three points, so that we can achieve our aims for the first round."

Aguirre's side have had an excellent tournament so far, drawing the opening match against the hosts 1-1, before easing past France 2-0.

The coach believes their pre-tournament work is finally paying off.

He added: "We've been working together now for about 75 days. Judging by the players' behaviour on and off the pitch, I think we're doing very well.

"We're in good form. I don't have variables to measure the mood, the physical status and the footballing feeling of the team.

"But all the games we've played together, I've seen huge enthusiasm, all with a will and wish to win. We lost against England and Holland but we've always been enthusiastic.

"We've defended our style and our approach. Of course, we've made mistakes and we've paid a high price. I hope we don't make mistakes and have a perfect game and can win."

Two players will definitely be out for Mexico - Arsenal striker Carlos Vela, who has a hamstring problem, and the suspended Efrain Juarez.

"We are very sad about Vela, that's a concern," said Aguirre. "But I've got 21 players available and their all physically and mentally very strong."

Oscar Tabarez is not worried about who his Uruguay team may play in the next round despite a potential South American derby against Argentina being on the cards.

La Celeste are on the brink of securing a place in the last 16 and a point against Mexico will ensure their progress.

It will also keep them in the number one position in Group A and help avoid a meeting with their continental neighbours, who are on course to top Group B.

However, Tabarez said: "I'm not even thinking about future matches. It's not a question of wanting to play with this team or that other team and I'm certainly not praying to do that or lighting candles.

"I've participated in prior World Cups and I know you have to come to a World Cup not thinking about this. We know which rivals we're going to have to play months in advance and all the possible permutations.

"What we want to do is qualify for the next round and in addition we want to top the group if we can but not because we want to avoid Argentina. So I've certainly not stopped to think about this."

As for those thinking the two countries may play out a deliberate draw that will render the South Africa-France clash meaningless. Tabarez added: "I think it's just lots of people being creative and also lacking respect for those of us, the players and the coaches, that are going to be playing in that match.

"But people can talk for free, so let's just leave it there."

Team BIO for This Match:
England : Group C

World Cup Appearances: 14

Algeria : Group C
Manager: Rabah Saadane
Star Player: Karim Zaini
World Cup Appearances: 3

Venue : Green Point Stadium

England Vs Algeria Team Profile:
England : Group C
The Three Lions go into 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals hoping to add to their solitary World Cup trophy that was famously won by Alf Ramsey’s ‘Wingless Wonders’ in 1966, when England hosted the event. With Fabio Capello at the helm, England swept through the qualification matches for the Finals, winning all but one match along the way, which culminated in the Lions’ 5-1 win over old enemy Croatia, giving them a place in South Africa with two games to spare.England is deep in all positions, particularly in the middle of the park, where Steven Gerrard and Frank Lamapard anchor a formidable midfield.

Chances for England to win Fifa World Cup Football 2010:
Stormed through qualification under Capello, whose winning pedigree in club football suggests a more ruthless and focused England are a good bet for at least a semi-final place. An easy draw threw up a straight-forward group but in the first knockout stage a showdown with Germany, Australia, Ghana or Serbia beckons.

Algeria : Group C
Algeria overcame fierce rivals Egypt in a one-off play-off after both countries finished level on points at the top of their group. In the neutral venue of Sudan, Algeria triumphed by a solitary goal by defender Antar Yahia to advance to their third World Cup finals appearance.Upon qualification, Algeria coach Rabah Saadane praised the commitment shown by his players. The Desert Foxes have failed to get out of the group stages during their last two finals outings and they will need the same commitment they showed against Egypt to qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Chances for Algeria to win Fifa World Cup Football 2010:
Qualifiers for the third time after eliminating Africa's continental champions Egypt, Saadane's men are defensively solid and are unlikely to be on the end of any thrashings in South Africa. That said, qualification for the last 16 looks too much to ask.

It is an unusual situation for Capello's side to be under such pressure, especially after a qualifying campaign that saw them lose just once, but the Italian's secrecy over his team selection has not helped matters and the press have gone into overdrive, creating a frosty atmosphere with the coach that worsened when he snapped at photographers recently.

With injury issues surrounding Ledley King, Jamie Carragher has been called into action at the heart of the defence alongside John Terry and, worryingly, there is now a distinct lack of pace in the centre. Algeria are not blessed with speed at the back either and there were rumours before the game that Jermain Defoe could be given a chance to run at the defenders in place of the lumbering Emile Heskey, with Peter Crouch's height continuing to be used as an option off the bench.

With the pace of Lennon and Johnson down the right, Algeria will look to left-back Nadir Belhadj to hold off their attacks and use his own speed to push them back into their own half. A defensive 4-5-1 formation from their opening game against Slovenia suggests that they won't be pushing forward with that much gusto, but the defeat already on their record means they need a win and should be looking to score early and then sit back. Former Marseille star Karim Ziani will be key to Algeria's hopes in the final third and his combination play with striker Rafik Djebbour could prove their best hope of scoring, especially on the counter attack.

Although this will be the first meeting between England and Algeria, the Three Lions have kept a clean sheet in four of their five World Cup encounters against African sides.

England player to watch: Gareth Barry. A gaping hole in the England midfield was left when Barry went down with an ankle injury before the tournament, and Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were left to try to fill in against USA. Barry is fit again now, so the defensive midfield slot is assured and the balance of the England side is much better. The left-footer will be alongside Lampard, with Gerrard switched to the left, and suddenly England look capable of providing more of an attacking threat.

Algeria player to watch:
Hassan Yebda. The 'heart and soul' of the team, Yebda's tracking back and tigerish tackling will assist in keeping the wing threat of England down. But he also has his own box of tricks and is a very capable crosser and dribbler of the ball. While he would want more in terms of a goal return, how he deals with Gerrard on the left of the midfield will determine how Algeria compete.

Key battle:
Robert Green v David James v Joe Hart v Faouzi Chaouchi. A rather odd battle perhaps, but whichever England goalkeeper gets the nod in the end will have his hands full with the media spotlight and will be under pressure not to make a mistake. Green is expected to keep the gloves, despite his error against USA and conventional wisdom suggests James will take his place if he is dropped, although Hart has been the man in form of late. Algeria's Chaouchi is under his own pressure after his mistake against Slovenia gifted them the win, so the 'keepers at both ends of the pitch will be key to the game.

Trivia:
Algeria's national anthem is called "Qassaman" - (The Pledge). Qassaman was written during Algeria's struggle for independence from French colonial rule. Seventeen of the 23 Algerian players were born in France.

Stats: England have never lost against an African team: 11 wins and four draws, while Algeria have never kept a clean sheet in seven World Cup matches.

Odds:
England (1.25), Algeria (12.00) and the draw (6.25) are all on offer at Bet 365, but Steven Gerrard to score last at 8.00 looks a nice bet.

Prediction: England stuttered a bit in the first game, but then so did Algeria. If England get an early goal it will settle the nerves, otherwise it will be tough to break down the Algerian side.

Team BIO for This Match:

Germany Vs Serbia Team Profile:
Germany : Group D
The perennial bridesmaid of the World Cup and the European Championships after the turn of the century, Germany are looking to shed the tag of ‘best loser’ in South Africa, and capture their first international title since their Euro ’96 triumph.Germany cruised through qualification to South Africa, but Joachim Low’s penchant for tinkering with his squad has seen his teams struggle for dominance in matches they should be winning, particularly in their game against Finland.Low will be looking to his veterans of Michael Ballack, Miroslav Klose and Torten Frings to finally win one for Die Mannschaft.

Chances for Germany to Win Fifa World Cup football 2010:
Perennial strong performers in tournaments, Low's side are sure to be contenders again in South Africa. If the likes of Ballack, Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez click then a quarter-final spot could be the very least they could expect.

Serbia : Group D
One of the shockers of the qualifying phase, Serbia beat out France for top spot in their group, in their first ever qualifying campaign as an independent nation, no less. The Beli Orlovi does boast some talent in their ranks, with Nemanja Vidic, Gojko Kacar, Dejan Stankovic and Nikola Zigic headlining a well-organised and balanced squad.

Chances for Serbia to Win Fifa World Cup football 2010:
Qualified ahead of France and with quality through the spine of the team in the shape of Nemanja Vidic, Stankovic and the giant Nikola Zigic up front, they would be a good bet for a last-16 place, and possibly a quarter-final.

Match preview:
Germany may have restored some international pride four years ago as they reached the semi-finals on home soil, but the perception of Germany as one of the pre-tournament favourites is a thing of the past.

The loss of Michael Ballack to an ankle injury, thanks to a late tackle from the German-born Kevin-Prince Boateng in the FA Cup final last month, meant coach Joachim Low effectively had to rip up his plans for South Africa and start again. The Germany captain was the fulcrum of the team both on and off the pitch, and the loss of such an inspirational figure is hard to cope with at such a late stage. Replacing the experienced 33-year-old Ballack with a 21-year-old international rookie in Mesut Ozil is a risk, but it could be a master-stroke if Ozil adapts to the pace of the World Cup quickly.

Much will rest on the shoulders of new captain Phillip Lahm, while Bastian Schweinsteiger will become the lynchpin of the midfield, allowing Ozil to push on in search of goals and become the key to open up Australia's defence.

With Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose woefully short of form, Germany may have to rely on their defence performing well to reach the latter stages. There's certainly no reason why Australia should not go into the game with some confidence.

Australia's main worry is a lack of depth to their squad and any striker worthy of the name. With Harry Kewell struggling with injury and and Scott McDonald surprisingly left at home, coach Pim Verbeek is left to rely on the untried Nikita Rukavytsya, Brett Holman for Joshua Kennedy goals.

With the Australia squad ageing, the athleticism and drive which the side possessed under Guus Hiddink four years ago could be missing, and without that the Socceroos will become a very one-dimensional side. And the threadbare nature of Verbeek's squad also makes any Plan B difficult to execute.

Brett Emerton and Mark Bresciano will look to add creativity and width for Australia but without a focal point for the attacks it could be that they too find themselves sitting deeper than they would like. This may especially be the case for Emerton who now plays as a right-back for his club, Blackburn Rovers.

Germany player in focus: Mesut Ozil. The loss of Michael Ballack to injury means Ozil will come into the side and get the chance to make his mark on the World Cup earlier than he would have expected. The Werder Bremen midfielder was a central figure in the Germany team which won the European Under-21 Championships last year and, with just 10 international caps to his name, now gets the chance on the biggest of stages. A player with a cultured left foot, his lack of consistency could be Germany's downfall.

Australia player in focus: Tim Cahill. While it might be obvious to say that the threat of Cahill from set-pieces will be no surprise to the German defence, his ability to lose his marker time and again in the Premier League proves that even the best prepared teams struggle to deal with his threat. With a dearth of attacking options open to Pim Verbeek, he will rely on Cahill's heading prowess to help power the Socceroos through to the Second Round for the second successive finals. With 20 goals in 40 international appearances, Cahill is more prolific than any of the nation's current strikers.

Key battle: Lucas Neill v Miroslav Klose. Klose may only be behind Gerd Muller in goalscoring for Germany, but the 2009-10 season was one to forget for the Bayern Munich striker. After scoring only three goals all season, Klose was woeful in Germany's warm-up games. But coach Joachim Low has thrown his support behind Klose, a proven and dangerous tournament performance. Despite his recent woes, his bustling style will mean Lucas Neill will need to be on his toes at the heart of the Australia defence. An out-of-sorts Klose is still more troublesome than most of the strikers at the World Cup.

Trivia: Australia scored the most goals in any World Cup qualifier after beating American Samoa 31-0 in 2001.

Stats: Germany's Miroslav Klose has scored 48 goals in 96 games for Germany, but he managed just three in the league for his club this seasaon.

Odds: Germany (1.50), the draw (4.20), Australia (7.00) with Bet365. Tim Cahill to score the last goal at 13.00 is a tempting offer.

Prediction: Australia may not have strength in depth and little to offer up front, but this Ballack-less Germany side still has plenty of questions to answer. Germany should win, but it won't be as straight forward as the odds suggest.

Match Analysis and background
The opening game in Group C brings together two countries, England and USA, with a history of close relations and comradeship off the field but very little in the way of history on it. Except for one startling exception: the 1950 FIFA World Cup clash in Belo Horizonte which the Americans, seen as a 'ragtag' outfit back home, took a battering ram to convention and upset their fancied opponents 1-0. With Slovenia and Algeria also in the group at South Africa 2010, the Rustenburg game could be pivotal in the fight for qualifying places.

The match
England-USA, Group C, Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace), Saturday 12 June, 20.30 (local time)

Under their new coach Fabio Capello, England put together a near-perfect qualifying campaign, winning nine of their ten games and scoring 34 goals - six more than Spain, the next best - to top Europe's goal chart with Wayne Rooney joint second in the individual scoring roster.

The US were also demonstrating efficiency, losing just twice in the final six-team Hexagonal phase of North, Central America and Caribbean Zone, finishing a point ahead of second-placed Mexico. A year ago their stock, and that of coach Bob Bradley, rose considerably with their performances at FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 where USA ousted favourites Spain in the semi-finals before going down to a narrow 3-2 final defeat to Brazil.

England haven't impressed in the run-up to South Africa, beating Mexico none-too-convincingly and then only overcoming Japan via two own-goals. Capello, who lost skipper Rio Ferdinand for the entire tournament after sustaining a knee injury in their first training session in Rustenburg, was also unhappy with the first-half performance in a practice match against the Platinum Stars. He is likely to install Ledley King, who has his own fitness worries, alongside John Terry in the heart of the defence while Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips might earn surprise starting roles to augment Wayne Rooney's attacking thrust.

The Americans have scored victories over Australia and Turkey but went down 4-2 to Turkey. They are likely to stick with the tried and trusted formula that saw them reach the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup with midfielder Michael Bradley, son of the coach, warning their opponents to expect a physical approach.

Players to watch
Jozy Altidore vs John Terry

Altidore has made giant strides with the national team, impressing in qualifying and becoming the youngest ever hat-trick hero in US history. He will prove a powerful opponent for Terry, England's former skipper, who's star has fallen during a difficult second half to last season. With his regular England partner, Ferdinand, absent, it will be down to Terry to keep the US heavy-hitters at bay.

The stat

3 - Half of USA's six wins in 25 FIFA World Cup encounters were achieved against European opposition. As well as that famous 1950 victory over England they also beat Belgium 3-0 in 1930 and Portugal 3-2 in 2002.

What they said
"The big difference is that we've got a fit Wayne Rooney in this squad. And the squad is quite experienced. Obviously we're missing Rio but this squad is balanced. I think this is a lot of guys' last chance, considering their age at this World Cup," Joe Cole, England midfielder.

"If we give up too many wide free-kicks and direct free-kicks, we will probably get punished for it. It's important we're solid in defence and not leave guys open one-on-one," Tim Howard, USA goalkeeper.

Voice of the fans
"Let's not forget the underdog in the World Cup 2002: USA 3-2 Portugal. Portugal were the semi-finalists in the Euro 2000. This match against the English squad could be a very good match or a blow out," FIFA.com user dmuma55.

The question
England often carry a 'fancied' tag into a FIFA World Cup only to depart disappointingly on a penalty shoot-out. Will 2010 be the year when they finally make amends?
Match Preview:
When England entered their first World Cup in 1950, they went down to a famous 1-0 defeat at the hands of the amateurs of USA in a match that became known as the 'Miracle on Grass'.

• David James: I'm ready to play
• John Brewin on USA
• Alexi Lalas: USA can compete
• Carlisle: USA aim to banish demons

The game has come a long way in America since that match and, while most firmly expect an England victory in Rustenburg on Saturday, an upset would hardly be viewed as miraculous.

England have mixed feelings going into the 2010 tournament. While Fabio Capello has turned the team around following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008, winning all but one of his competitive matches, the disjointed performances in the warm-up games for South Africa have done little to inspire confidence.

USA, though, have also struggled to convince during their warm-up matches, and it is largely the memories of last year's 2-0 victory over Spain in the Confederations Cup that will provide hope of a win in what represents a huge match for both countries.

"For the last six months, all we've seen is US-England, so if you're a casual sports fan at home you might think this is the World Cup final," USA star Landon Donovan said in his press conference ahead of the game. "We're not like Brazil where if they don't win the World Cup soccer is still the biggest thing in anyone's mind, but this is a great opportunity to grow the sport."

USA could adopt a 4-5-1 formation for the match with Jozy Altidore as a lone striker, with Japan enjoying success against England using the same formation as they dominated the midfield battle. With Donovan and Clint Dempsey out wide, the tactic would not be overly defensive.

England have largely used 4-4-2, and a change seems unlikely at this stage, but it was only when Joe Cole was brought on as a substitute against Japan that England were able to compete in the middle, so Capello's hand may be forced.

USA coach Bob Bradley has said all 23 players in his squad are ready to play the full 90 minutes, although Oguchi Onyewu's lack of match practice in recent months remains a concern. For England, Gareth Barry's absence could prove problematic given the lack of an alternative holding midfielder in the squad.

England player in focus: Aaron Lennon. England's right winger has often been central to hopes of unlocking opposition defences and, while Joe Cole should offer creativity from the left, Lennon could become the focus if his team struggle. He'll come up against an experienced opponent in USA captain Carlos Bocanegra, the former Fulham man who now plays in Ligue 1 with Rennes, so Fabio Capello will hope the Tottenham man can rediscover his pre-injury form on the big stage.

USA player in focus: Landon Donovan. This pacy attacker is very much the star of the USA team and he can provide a real threat out wide, frequently swapping flanks with Fulham's Clint Dempsey. The English defenders will be fully aware of his capabilities following his loan stint with Everton earlier this year, and Ashley Cole may be a little wary of facing the man whose tackle nearly ruled him out of the tournament. If Donovan gets a chance to play on the left flank, Glen Johnson will need to curtail his natural instinct to support the attack.

Key battle: Wayne Rooney v Oguchi Onyewu. Rooney finally ended an international goal drought with his strike in the warm-up match against Platinum Stars, but he may have the chance to really kick-start his England career on Saturday. USA centre back Onyewu, the former Newcastle loanee, joined AC Milan from Standard Liege last summer but made just one appearance in Serie A after suffering a knee injury on international duty. USA coach Bob Bradley believes Onyewu is fit to play the full 90 minutes but, as he has not appeared in any of the warm-up games, it is essential that he gets back up to speed from the off.

Trivia: England boss Fabio Capello gave USA coach Bob Bradley some help and insights into the world of management during his time at AC Milan in the 1990s.

Stats: Wayne Rooney was involved in more goals than any other player in Europe during the qualification campaign, with nine goals and five assists. USA have not kept a clean sheet in a World Cup finals match since beating England 1-0 in 1950.

Odds: England (1.50), the draw (4.20), USA (7.00) with Bet365. USA are 15.00 to win 1-0, which could be worth a flutter.

Prediction:
USA showed they are capable of causing shocks in the Confederations Cup last year, and their experience in South Africa may give them an advantage in terms of adapting to the altitude. However, England are firm favourites for the match and should have enough to clinch a victory.
