Mexico overcame a sluggish start to their CONCACAF qualification to finish second behind rivals USA. Javier Aguirre, who took over Sven-Goran Eriksson in April, led Mexico to six wins in their last nine games to guarantee their entry into the draw for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. It will be their fifth straight tournament and 13th overall.
The Mexicans gave a good account of themselves in the 2006 World Cup by qualifying for the last 16 by finishing second behind Portugal. Mexico then met in-form Argentina and were only knocked out 2-1 during extra-time.
Mexico will travel to South Africa as one of the most exciting attacking sides in the World Cup boasting the talents of Carlos Vela, Giovanni Dos Santos and Guillermo Franco.
Chances to win fifa world cup 2010:
Aguirre revived El Tricolor's qualifying campaign after the disastrous reign of Sven-Goran Eriksson, but they have never been beyond the second round outside Mexico, and the conditions in South Africa are hardly likely to be conducive to them changing that statistic.
